DELIVER QUALITY EDUCATION

Understanding that education is the key to changing futures and realizing it is a priority for Sri Lankan families, equally for females and males, TRIP Canada launched an education program in 2006. It includes English classes, high-school enrichment, tutoring, post-secondary scholarships, and individual support programs for people with disabilities. Many lives have been transformed by these programs and life opportunities improved.

  • English Classes: TRIP Canada funds English classes for children to support them in their pursuit of higher education and increase their access to improved job opportunities.

  • Tutoring Support: After completing Grade 12, Sri Lankans must attend and pay for costly “tuition” classes to pass state examinations to qualify for university. TRIP Canada subsidizes the cost of these classes for approximately 25 students each year. Students are identified in collaboration with community leaders.

  • University Scholarships: The Scholarship Program helps post-secondary students by paying a portion of their room, board, textbooks and transportation. The government pays tuition and the families contribute to the best of their ability. Scholarships range from $500 to $600 per year based on need, program and university location.

  • Sponsorships: Most of our students are sponsored by a volunteer or donor. If you are interested in sponsoring a student, please contact us.

Today, with thanks to our donors, many students have received assistance and taken the opportunity to pursue higher education. We are extremely proud of all the students who have graduated from university and are working hard to contribute to their communities as doctors, accountants, teachers, IT specialists, engineers, and more!

MEET SISTERS SUMUDU AND DINITHI

After their mother deserted the family, Dinithi and Sumudu were raised by their grandmother and father who worked hard as a farmer to support them. We met the sisters when Dinithi was in grade 8 (above left) and Sumudu aspired to university, but they could not afford the essential tuition classes for her. The community Monk told their grandmother about TRIP Canada’s scholarship program. Since we met the family in 2014, Sumudu and her younger sister Dinithi have been supported by TRIP Canada volunteer Penny Gumley for tuition classes and university. Today Sumudu is a teacher in the community and Dinithi is about to graduate with a degree in business management. Thank you Penny for coming to Sri Lanka three times and changing the lives of these wonderful, extremely bright young women. They love you!

“It's a privilege to help provide these brilliant young students with the opportunities that education can provide. To watch them grow and develop a career that will support their family and their community is truly a gift.”

“Becoming a cardiologist is the biggest dream of my life. Having a good place to stay, buying books and all the equipment like a stethoscope would be impossible without this scholarship.”

Pavani, Future Cardiologist

“I am sincerely grateful for the support you have given me so far. Without your help I would never have made it to university. Now I am studying management at the BEST school in Sri Lanka.”
